About Acupuncture

Our clinic uses sterilized, single-use, stainless steel needles that are so thin the diameter is often compared to that of a human hair. Insertion is relatively painless and most patients describe the sensation as warmth, dullness, pressure, heaviness, or tingling. And, most patients report a profound sense of relaxation and well being both during and after acupuncture treatment.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of micro-fine needles into points along pathways on the surface of the body called meridians. These points and meridians have a direct relationship with internal organ systems and areas of the body. Stimulation of acupuncture points with needles, electricity, heat or pressure has the effect of moving energy and promoting blood circulation. By manipulating energy and circulation, balance and health is restored.

From a biomedical perspective, acupuncture affects your body's nervous system and circulatory system, which regulates the production, secretion and transportation of various chemical compounds, including hormones, like endorphins, and neurotransmitters. By regulating your body's physiological functions, a state of homeostasis is restored.

FAQs

Q: Does Acupuncture hurt?
A: Acupuncture rarely causes any pain. Acupuncture needles are very fine and flexible, about the diameter of a human hair. The most common sensation is heaviness or tingling in the area of insertion. Most patients find treatments to be very relaxing and many fall asleep.

Q: Is Acupuncture safe?
A: When preformed by a qualified, licensed professional, acupuncture is one of the safest medical procedures in the world. Acupuncture needles are sterile and disposed of after each use.

Q: How long is the treatment?
A: Generally an acupuncture treatment lasts around 1 hour, but may run as long as 1:45 hours.

Q: How many treatments will I need?
A: Acupuncture treats the underlying cause of illness thus alleviating symptoms and strengthening your overall system. Usually one or two treatments per week, but it depends on your condition. You practitioner will give you a general idea of the time necessary. Chronic illness may require treatment for several weeks or longer and acute problems generally respond much faster.
