Although our bodies do possess the inherent wisdom and ability to heal, there are many factors that can impede this natural process. In our fast-paced, contemporary, urban lifestyles, we tend to be overworked, overstressed, overcommitted, overtired and overexposed to a multitude of drugs, chemicals, radiation and superbugs. And if that isn't taxing enough, we are also plagued by repetitive thinking and worry, as well as injuries and physical trauma. Under these conditions, it's no surprise that our bodies' natural healing energy can become weakened, blocked or damaged.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a unique perspective on the nature of health and illness. It regards the human body, mind and spirit with great reverence, respecting and promoting its boundless capacity for renewal and recovery.

How It Works

Eastern Perspective

The concept of "energy" is what makes Traditional Chinese Medicine distinct. Whether you accept the notion of "qi" or prefer to think about the electrical impulses inherent in our nervous system, it doesn't really matter-either way, it's difficult to deny the fact that humans are energetic beings. Our physical, emotional and spiritual bodies abound with electromagnetic and subtle energies that form the very foundation of our health. When our energy system is strong, abundant and flowing smoothly, we experience health and vitality. In contrast, when our energy system becomes weakened, deficient or obstructed, then we experience pain, illness and disease. From a Chinese medical perspective, these energy deficiencies and blockages are at the root of most disease processes within the human body.

Traditional Chinese Medicine uses a holistic approach to diagnose these energy imbalances and identify their root cause. Once diagnosis is established, safe and natural therapies are utilized to strengthen and balance your body's innate healing energy in order to restore health. Treatment is focused on alleviating the root cause of your imbalance, which means you experience more profound, lasting health, as opposed to a mere masking of your symptoms.

How It Works

Western Perspective

The concept of "qi" (pronounced "chee") and "meridians" remains elusive for many of us, however some scientists and doctors believe the "human energy system" could be Western biomedicine's final frontier. The question isn't whether or not acupuncture works, but rather, "how" does it work? In light of this, the biomedical community has developed five prevailing hypotheses to explain how acupuncture achieves its therapeutic results. These theories are based upon studies performed by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Blood samples were taken from patients before and after acupuncture, then evaluated to determine what physiological changes occurred in the body.
